AI in Product Design: Ally or Enemy?

In recent years, artificial intelligence has fully entered the world of product design, transforming not only the tools available to designers but also the creative and decision-making processes. The big question many professionals are asking is: is AI truly a valuable ally, or does it risk becoming an enemy of creativity?

AI as an ally

AI provides concrete support in the most repetitive and technical phases of work. It can generate wireframes, suggest color palettes, propose interface variations, and even anticipate user behavior through predictive systems. This allows designers to save time and focus on the strategic and creative aspects of the project.
Moreover, thanks to data analysis, AI helps reduce errors and uncover usage patterns that would be hard to detect with the human eye, ultimately enhancing the user experience.

From my own experience, AI has boosted my workflow by nearly 70%. Tasks that once required hours of manual effort are now streamlined, giving me more freedom to dedicate energy to ideation, strategy, and user empathy. Instead of replacing my role, AI has amplified my ability to deliver value faster and at a higher quality.

AI as a potential enemy

On the flip side, there’s the risk of progressive standardization in design. If we rely too heavily on algorithms, products may start looking alike, losing the unique identity that only a human designer can provide.
There’s also an ethical question: who is responsible for design decisions suggested by AI? And to what extent do the datasets used to “train” these systems respect user privacy?

Striking the balance

The answer is probably not “ally or enemy,” but rather “it depends on how it’s used.” AI doesn’t replace the designer’s role—it amplifies it. It’s up to us to set the boundaries, deciding when to lean on the machine and when to rely on intuition, empathy, and sensitivity—qualities only humans can bring.

In the end, AI in product design is like a new colleague: it may feel overwhelming at first, but if we learn to understand it and integrate it into the creative process, it can become an extraordinary ally.
